How to Wire Brush Wood

A wire brush is a tool for removing paint or finish from wood. 

Applied aggressively, a wire brush can also be used to distress wood, because it will wear off the softer, lighter-colored portions of the wood grain while leaving the denser wood behind. The result is a time-worn appearance characteristic of outdoor weathering. A wire brush is not recommended for refinishing fine furniture.

Step 1

Put on safety glasses before using a wire brush to protect your eyes from flying debris.


Step 2

Secure the wood to keep it from shifting. Use a wood clamp to hold small pieces of wood that may move around as you apply the wire brush.


Step 3

Tape off any areas that you want to protect from the wire brush, using a few layers of painter's tape. Painter's tape will not leave any residue on the wood.


Step 4

Work your soft brass wire brush in the same direction as the wood grain, using repeated strokes until the wood displays the desired level of wear or distress.


Step 5

Sand the wood with a fine grain sandpaper to remove any burs or splinters left behind by the wire brush. The wood is now ready to be stained and finished to your taste.

  A brass wire brush of the correct size for the bore will not change the rifling cut into the hardened steel barrel, but over time it will alter the ballistic signature used to distinguish between bullets fired from guns of the same make and model via forensic examination.  Any significant abrasion will alter the signature, such as firing 4 boxes of ammo (200 rounds) at the range.  This is a gradual process that occurs due to normal wear. If a criminal needed to drastically alter the signature immediately, a rat tail file would be run through the bore, and other parts would need to be altered to change the markings on ejected casings. A brass brush is typically only run through the bore ten times per cleaning session, which will produce far less friction than repeatedly firing it. It would require about ten cleanings to make a noticable difference. It is unlikely this would effect accuracy in anything other than a competition firearm. How do you keep rust off of steel that's been sanded or wire brushed ? Option 1 - keep the humidity of the environment below 70% rH. Option 2 - coat the clean steel with oil or corrosion inhibitor. Option 3 - paint it. Option 4 - apply a ‘conversion coating’ such as a phosphate wash that will prevent atmospheric corrosion on a temporary or semi-permanent basis. Option 5 - electroplate zinc onto the steel. Option 6 - dip it in molten zinc (i.e. galvanize it). Option 7 - Sheradize it (usually only applied on small components) Option 8 - Aluminize it (as above).
