How do you keep rust off of steel that's been sanded or wire brushed?
Option 1 - keep the humidity of the environment below 70% rH.
Option 2 - coat the clean steel with oil or corrosion inhibitor.
Option 3 - paint it.
Option 4 - apply a ‘conversion coating’ such as a phosphate wash that will prevent atmospheric corrosion on a temporary or semi-permanent basis.
Option 5 - electroplate zinc onto the steel.
Option 6 - dip it in molten zinc (i.e. galvanize it).
Option 7 - Sheradize it (usually only applied on small components)
Option 8 - Aluminize it (as above).
Option 9 - Apply a sprayed metal coating such as plasma- or HVOC-applied aluminum or nickel alloy (but make sure the component is designed for the application of such a coating, also that the coating itself isn’t too thick, and that you apply a seal coating to block any residual porosity afterwards).
Option 10 - Apply a weld-overlaid coating, for example a hard-facing cobalt alloy, or a weld-or laser-applied alloy cladding.
